One of the biggest problems that California is facing now is that the institutions that have made California great once have ossified to the point they are a major obstacle to our ability to achieve our potential. There is no better example than the struggle of the parents at McKinley Elementary in Compton, California.

Our educational system was one of the important ways that America itself of Europe in the 1800s separated. America plowed its profits of the industrial revolution back in the creation of the largest education system that the world had ever seen.

The result was the creation in the 20th century of the "American middle class," a true wonder of the modern world. Education is also essential for our future.

Indeed, even during the depths of the recent recession, unemployment among people with college degrees was only 5 percent--half the national average.

Still in Los Angeles, a province with more people than 42 other States, only 1 in 10 students who are high school to college and more than 50 percent will go do not even graduate.

According to the u.s. Department of education is California ranks no higher than 47th of the 50 States in reading, writing and science. And at national level, of the top 35 countries, the United States is ranked 29 in the science and 35th in math.

California is gone from the best of the best to the worst of the worst. This must change.

And that is exactly what the parents at McKinley Elementary try to do. On McKinley are only 24% of the 5th graders proficient in reading and mathematics. Not satisfied with these results, the parents petition the McKinley school under the law "Parent Trigger" to make the necessary changes.

The reaction of the establishment of education was in the words of the San Francisco Chronicle "breathtaking hostile." The local governance of the school refused to accept the petitions.

Governor Brown fired the State school board officials that the reforms to replace them with members in the pocket of the teachers Union supported. Former Democratic Senator Gloria Romero, sponsor of the legislation, was forced to admit that the looting of the members of the Council was "payback to the CTA."

However, as disgusting as the first reaction of the establishment of education was, the strength and perseverance shown by the McKinley parents and subsequent support from across the country, including the near universal adoption of every major newspaperMcKinley, has given the students a chance to fight.

On 11 March is the Sacramento Bee reported at the State level new school Board President Michael Kirst leads the way to the implementation of legislation. The meeting of the Board of education on April 21, will be very important and promises to be well attended.

However, like with a good referee for a sporting event does not guarantee victory that, strong and fair rules do not guarantee a successful outcome for our students looking for the trigger.

The teachers Union has made clear their intent – they will do anything and everything to maintain their stranglehold on our education system--even when it is not in the best interest of the children. It is up to us and continue to support the parents in Compton in California and who have the courage to stand up for their children will show.
