Robot competition celebrates in UC Davis-News10. net

DAVIS, CA-they are not your father's robots. These sophisticated machines to take part in the annual first robotics competition at UC Davis are the result of the hard work and dedication of high schoolers, mostly from California.

Slideshow: Robotic competition

The robots are a mix of gears, cables, lights and computer processors. All have some sort of arm with a gripping device. During the games, inflatable objects picked up on the floor of the arena and hoisted on raised posts.

The collection of intellect is evident in the "pits," the area next to the arena where students tweak, repair and admire their robots. Terms such as pneumatics, compensators and inverse kinematics are pretty over thrown by these potential engineers.

The amount of time that these children to their projects committing suggests there is not much time for anything else. She dreams about robots?

"It pretty much consumed your entire life, especially during the game, so you won't get much sleep, so you don't have time to dream about," said David Rappaport DaVinci Academy Charter in Sacramento. His team, "Citrus Circuits," "hundreds and hundreds of" has spent hours perfecting both the hardware and the software for their creation, "optomist Lime."

All teams are given six weeks to design, build and program their robot. They all begin with the same kit and go from there. Rappaport is the team of the programmer. He is responsible for the instructions in the on-board computer to the robot, including the autonomous movements that part of the competition.

Although the majority of the members of the team guys are, has a team, the "Fem Bots," from St. Francis High School in Sacramento, all the girls on their roster. Their robot, "Andy", was dressed in pink, and this team is ready for the competition.

"It is dominated by men, but that's kinda half the fun," said co-captain Ashley Peng. "We want to compete against them and succeed."

The competition continues Saturday at UC Davis in the activities and recreation centre.

HTC Thunderbolt screen comparison: looks are deceiving-Android community

Users of the new HTC Thunderbolt may be completely satisfied with your phone's touchscreen display … as long as they don't show it next to the Google Nexus S or Atrix 4 g. compare Thunderbolts TFT display with Google Nexus S Super AMOLED display, or even Atrix 4 g qHD viewIt really shows how dampened and blurred images from TBolt really see. but it is still a pretty impressive screen according to the review of Vince over at SlashGear. Users should not just go to show the envy.

In view of the enormous 4.03? would perhaps other display options have been cost prohibitive. Vince also mentioned it is one of the brightest TFT monitors he has ever seen. All three monitors were set to maximum brightness settings for optimal viewing. Users can find different results with different settings and lighting conditions and most people will prefer a warmer tone for every day use.

HTC under bolt is still a major league performer, however, with a Qualcomm 1 GHz single-core gene MSM8655 chipse, 768 MB RAM and 8 GB of internal storage. Running the Android 2.2 (Froyo), but see for a Gingerbread update sometime soon since they have to adapt it to the interface sense. It has also the meaning of the HTCS overlay interface, dual cameras, including a 8MP rear says shooting pretty impressive 720HD video and a dual LED flash. Finally screams at Verizon 4 G/LTE networks despite not having an option for dual-core processor.

So, although there is certainly brighter displays out there, it does not mean that users will be short moved by Thunderbolt. Far From It. The colors are warm and bright, with pictures and video drunk right off the screen. This is probably the best of both worlds. Check out Slashgears in depth review here.

iTunes to Bolster ' NY Times ' Paywall-Mediapost.com

When Apple its iTunes subscription service launched last month, greet content providers not moving with open arms. That's because Apple takes a reduction of 30% of the sales, customer data for subscriptions sold via the App store not share and publishers not to sell subscriptions for less on their own sites required.

Nevertheless, if The New York Times the long awaited digital subscription plan unveiled Thursday, revealed that it would sell access to iPhone and iPads via iTunes, under the new conditions. The iPhone app is bundled in the $ 15 monthly basic package; get the iPad app with online access costs $ 20 per month; and a package "all Digital Access" is $ 35 per month.

Other publishers have so clearly the Times decided that it is worth to go the iTunes route despite circumstances balked at. But, putting aside any financial calculations went into the decision, it's not hard to see why the times already. A key to a subscription service is to remove obstacles to log on as many people as possible. By giving the millions of people who already have iTunes accounts have the ability to subscribe via 1-click purchase (30 June), the times is to make it easier for the readers to get on board.

What is more than one site only to be confronted with a registration page to access content by clicking unattractive? Because the iTunes customers to avoid process, can sign the times potentially more people than it would have been able to otherwise. That seems to be the bet that is the creation of the company.

In response to a request said a times spokesperson today that the company digital subscriptions are based on extensive surveys of users show that they wanted to access from multiple platforms. The research also indicates the heaviest users own smartphones and tablets. So that core segment convert to paid users is crucial, and through which they can subscribe via iTunes will help to pave the way.

Charging $ 5 more a month for the iPad access, however, seems doubtful. For the sake of simplicity, and to ensure another sweetener, maybe it would have been better to the Apple tablet under the basic offer. Times digital chief Martin Nisenholtz told all things d found the company a "greater willingness to pay under iPad users" that much more time than Web or smartphone users with time.

The Times subscription plans also work with Android and BlackBerry-powered phones. When it comes to the growing field of iPad competitors, the times said it was still assessing the latest platforms and tablets. At the launch, it is also not able to connect NYTimes.com access all times people subscriptions to e-readers like the Kindle or Nook. But the company said it plans to the e-reader subscription options soon. The sooner the better, since begins provides a consistent, seamless experience across devices are important if the time will have to charge for access in a variety of devices. People are not as forgiving when the content and services are not free.

Report: research in Gizmodo iPhone Prototype case almost done-PC Magazine

With all the fanfare surrounding the release of the iPad 2 and the persistent rumors surrounding the next iPhone, news about the stolen iPhone 4 prototype a distant memory for some tech enthusiasts.

But the researchers are still working the case, and Stephen Wagstaffe, district attorney for the county of San Mateo, California on Thursday told CNet that it to an end as early as next month to come, when these researchers Wagstaffe present with their findings.

To refresh your memory, Gizmodo posted last year photos and videos of what it claimed to be a prototype of the next iPhone before the official launch of the iPhone 4. Later it was revealed that Gizmodo of 22-year-old Brian Hogan bought for $ 5,000 after it was left in a Redwood City bar by Apple employee Gray Powell.

Days later, police seized four computers and two servers from Gizmodo editor Jason Chen. The warrant said police were looking for property that was: the use of committing a crime; or tends to show that a crime was committed, or that a certain person has committed a crime.

In July and Gawker Media Gizmodo agreed to voluntarily about relevant documents to the authorities in return for the fact that the warrant declared invalid.

Prosecutors are conducting a felony theft investigation, but no charges have been filed, CNet said. It apparently has taken this long because researchers were busy with other cases. Hogan, Chen and Gawker Media can all be objectives of the research.

The investigation has led to questions of whether Gizmodo is protected as a news organization, or if the blog is liable, because the stolen goods purchased. Stay tuned.

Malicious spam leads to Japan quake scareware-ZDNet (blog)

What is common between this Japan quake; the United States, Russian, Chinese HAARP and illegal export of Plutonium?

To make it short-if you how the reactor is blown will analyze, you will find that they knew that the reactor was overheating. Even if the water system was damaged by the earthquake (it is unlikely that-it has to be man-made), anyway-they intentionally did not cool the reactor by the seawater before it was too late to prevent it.

If you can find on the internet you will find that at the time of the disaster, people discovered the signatures of the use of HAARP stations in the USA, Russia and China--simultaneously.

What is common between those orders in different countries (Presidents, etc.)? All of them belong to those who themselves as the "chosens" with the name = they are a team, that the people that they are on the opposite sides fools.

It means that this earthquake (and not just this) was planned to be used as an excuse to blow the reactor. They thought that the whole humanity will fault of nature, but not the real reason-the "chosens" in power and their plan to more than 6 billion people (read their memo on the Georgia Guidestones).

Why they need to damage of the reactor (s)?

See what Japanise officials talked about the future of the nucleate fuel-they will use it = it will disappear.

It means that they planed this disaster because they needed to steal from this nucleate fuel. In this case, the before the disaster be stolen. That explains why radioactive pollution is not near as bad as Chernobyl one.

For what? Of course, not to another nuclear power plant. So, the only one logical reason-to sell it to a country for making secret nucleate bombs-in this case, nobody will be looking for the missing Japanese Plutonium = people will not be warned about ... It means that top-rank Japanese officials a part of the crime.

How will these bombs are used? Apparently up to the third world war because they initiate and plan all their events according to the Mayan calendar, they'll start the WWIII on December 21, 2012. When this (or these) patcy-land use of these nuclear bombs will make and will fake their origin-it will be an excuse for the "chosens" to the entire human species by the will of mankind.

How? The "chosens," currently in all developed countries are in power, will help each other to eradicate Nations, which they officially have to protect Presidents, etc. They have already built for THEMSELVES and believe that underground cities after WWIII they humanity by remotely managed bio-robots (the implanted former man will replace).

So, the key question is-what people have to deal with: to go as the sheep their slaughterhouse, or what?

For instance, you need to buy their goods to these types of non-humanoid, like Bill Gates, Rothchilds, Rockefellers, ... reacher and encourage them to kill you faster, or is it better to go with the OSS = take away some power from them?

Decide-are you a sheep or man? If you think you are a human that, then act ...

PS have you noticed that there are no reports related to abnormal animal activity as it should days before any natural earthquake? HAARP-created function?

Windows 7 tool no. 1: Evernote
This tool is one that even Mac users appreciate. The last few weeks I've been using Evernote notes. I have brought it to the Microsoft campus the last MVP Summit, for example, CEO Steve Ballmer Keynote and mentioned also note applications. OneNote is the most important Microsoft app for this purpose, so it is funny that the guy has been like Microsoft Evernote-flag.

I first discovered Evernote on my Android smartphone and found it, it gives me easily add recorded sound, pictures, and videos, then my notes are synchronized, they are on my laptop to the hotel and my PC at home. In fact, you can capture anything in quite a lot of the see or listen to the notes on the accounts, then use notes, almost all of the computer, smartphone, and on the Tablet PC: Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android and so on. And notes are searchable. Good work!

Windows 7 tool no. 2: easy to copy the file in the Finder
How many copies of the same image, file, or video, you have a PC? In my case there must be two or three copies of some of the items, but I have no idea if additional properties are. I am also afraid if you delete it in one place, at a later date, you will see that the only copy of this was my file, so you need more copies. I also have copies of one external drive after another because of the need to have backup copies. Easy to copy the file in the Finder, locate all of them quickly and you can solve them easily and safely.

Although free, consider instead, the $ 99 Professional DataStor n Desktop protection 2010, which backs up your desktop and external deduplicates and mapped drives.

Windows 7 tool no. 3: FastStone photo Resizer
When you transfer pictures from your camera, do I know if I could (and should) them, but you do not do so in a lot of time. FastStone Photo Resizer I rename and resize pictures. Plus, add watermark and text, as well as crop, rotate and change the color depth of images.

If you want to simply the files again, try using File Renamer Basic instead.

Windows 7 desktops tool no. 4:
Created by Microsoft engineers, desktop computers, you can use to up to four virtual desktops with monitors to better take advantage of.

In addition, you may be able to, such as some of the other tools that the team member who created the Mark Russinovich has developed, including the ZoomIt Security_patch (for easy application of zoom, education) and the BgInfo (to display information about the system to the right of the text on the desktop with the overlap).

Windows 7 tool no. 5: TeamViewer
(I) törmänneet-TeamViewer Download site. It is screen sharing and file transfer application that allows remote access to another computer so that you can help the tech challenge the relatives. There are other tools in this way, the placing on the market, but TeamViewer is easy to install and handle; In addition, it is free.

Windows 7 tool no. 6: ClipTraining
This is my company's tool, but it is worth. ClipTraining 100 videos (five hours some of) the Windows 7 task-based training and guidance to the Office and other applications.

Windows 7 tool no. 7: AllMyApps
This is a good idea: take all the applications, which normally do not need to download and install one at a time, but instead choose them all from one source, then download and install them in one group. AllMyApps is more than 1600 apps available.

Windows 7 tool no. 8: Dropbox
Cloud-based Dropbox, you can use it with a free 2 GB of space (you can rent more if necessary) to conclude that there has been an operational backup copies, and transfer the data easily from one system to another. Dropbox is also a great tool for cooperation; Unlike an FTP server, you can simply drop a file in the Dropbox folder and it automatically synchronizes the system to the other, with whom you have granted Access. It works on Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android and other platforms.

There is, of course, many of the tools for Windows users. InfoWorld.com colleagues and have covered some of the other stories:
